Mkhuze area

12th-13th June 2015
We left Wakkerstroom early on 12th to head for the Mkhuze area.  Our accommodation was at the Umkhumbi Lodge  (see http://umkhumbilodge.co.za/ )

The Important Place - The bar and dining area

Gaboon Adder - One of several of these very dangerous venomous snakes that were being kept in an enclosed area by the owner of the site.

Pineapple Plantation - Just at the entrance to the site.

Mkhuze Game Reserve - We spent a day on the reserve.

Mkhuze - This large lake produced a wide variety of birds, mammals, etc.



African Fish Eagle - Seen on half of the days during the trip

Little Egret and Hippopotamus - A good solid place the perch!

Hippopotamus - Common in several locations.

Wildebeest - Seen from hide at a water hole.

Zebra- Seen from hide at a water hole.


White Rhinos- Seen from hide at a water hole.

White Rhinos - We saw these at several locations during the trip.
Kudu - A young or female

Nyala - We only saw this species in Mkuze

Warthog - Not exactly pretty!  Fairly common here and in Kruger NP

Chacma Baboon - Fairly common.

Emerald-spotted Wood-Dove

Away from the waterhole we encountered :-

Scarlet-chested Sunbird - Sadly the males did not show as well as this female.

Wildebeest - More of these now sheltering from the heat.

Lizard Buzzard - We were fortunate enough to see two of these during the trip.  Not common.

Blue Waxbill - Photographed close to the information centre at Mkhuze

White-crested Helmetshrike - Above and below.  Seen several times during the trip.
